Overnight in Kingston to see Sir John A.

A recent overnight stay in Kingston on the way to Montreal reminded me of the depth of history in this city. Signage from Highway 401 has been improved.

We took John A. Macdonald Boulevard to Princess Street where we had the choice of 3 hotels, budget at Knights Inn, Middle Range at Peachtree Inn, and upscale at Best Western. This location is perfect stop with good restaurants and easy access to downtown Kingston.

If you want to bone up on Sir John A. read the recent Biography "The Man Who Made Us by Richard Gwynhttp://www.richardjgwyn.ca/johna/index.php. See Kingston Ontario Hotels http://janroncommunications.com/hotel-locations/hotels/ca-on-kingston.html

Friendly and unique Along Boulevard Saint-Laurent

On a recent trip to Montreal we explored Boulevard Saint-Laurent stumbled upon the TooZoo store and as pet lovers browsed the variety of accessories for pets..buying a dog collar. In the process we met the charming owner who gave us lots of tips about Boul. St. Laurent, places to eat etc. If you are in Montreal over Easter they are having an Easter egg hunt. Needless to say we visited the famous Swartzs Deli for lunch

Diefenbunker near Halifax--Art Gallery & Tribute to a Prime Minister Past

Anyone travelling in Canada during a nuclear attack should get over to the Diefenbunker--now art gallery and museum of sorts.  See Globe and Mail story  An artist and an entrepreneur give new life to a Cold War relic: the Diefenbunker as well as Dief under ultra-violet lighting.
Canada's 13th Prime Minister, John George Diefenbaker, PC, CH, QC (September 18, 1895 – August 16, 1979) led Canada as its 13th Prime Minister, serving from June 21, 1957, to April 22, 1963.  See more on John Diefenbaker at  Wikipedia

Maple Syrup Tourism-- China & Chinese Tourists will take to Maple Syrup?

Maple Syrup Festival Near Barrie Ontario
Buried in the last paragraph of today's Globe and Mail story on Maple Syrup demand is a reference to a Maple Syrup producer in Beachville Ontario. This producer is excited about the Chinese market increasing visits to Canada and of course taking home maple syrup. I believe the greater potential is creating more events and festivals that celebrate the "Canadian Maple Harvest" to attract visitors during what is considered to be a slower time...the off season in Canada's tourism industry.  See Globe story "A maple syrup hoard aimed at Asian plates" by Rita Trichur.  See Maple Syrup in CanadaMaple Syrup Festivals & Events in Canada

Toronto is New York of the North? Inexpensive? MMMM?

According to the New York News an article by Mark Ellwood  states "Toronto is often called New York North, Canada's answer to the Big Apple — a glitzy, fast-paced, world-class city that pulses 24-7.........  Toronto feels like New York in an alternate universe, or an episode of "Fringe." Squint a little and it isn't that similar at all.

There is enough of a difference from an outsider to make me want to go to Toronto again. As an original born and bred Torontonian, this story makes me feel good about the "Big Smoke". See complete story, book Toronto Hotels

If Toronto is like New York north, then north of Toronto is like "Upstate New York" or the UP in Michigan...only different. Exciting resort destinations, rural towns and villages.  An estimated 99% of Canada's land mass is north of Toronto.
