The Lost Art of Letter Writting--Haliburton Ontario Canada

Saturday, September 17 , 2001. at 1pm
CURATORIAL TALK by Laurie Carmount

I am tired, Beloved,
of chafing my heart against the want of you;
of squeezing it into little inkdrops,
And posting it.
~Amy Lowell, "The Letter"
The present exhibition at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery, titled "Dear Andre", has a selection of letters handwritten by Lapine five years before he died. The art of writing a letter was as important in imparting his feelings as it was when he painted a painting. This is where the 'art' lies. The concern is, are we losing this in our ways of communication today?  Please join us for this informal yet thought-provoking journey through Lapine's letters, the significant information they conveyed and all sorts of things in between.  Stay in Haliburton Accommodation
André Lapine
The gallery exhibits from its collection of over one hundred pieces of Lapine’s work throughout the year.
Born in Latvia in 1866, Andreas Christian Gottfried Lapine began his formal training as an artist at the age of 18. He travelled to England, France and Holland where he studied until his marriage and immagration to Manitoba in 1905. In 1912 he moved to Toronto where he became a successful illustrator at Brigden Ltd. He was accepted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1919. His paintings were very popular and he was described in the media as the "Gentle Cavalier, the best illustrator of horses in Canada". A major success in the 1920s and 30s, Lapine’s work exhibited in the most prestigious shows. Today his work is in numerous public collections across Canada. Lapine died in 1952.
