War of 1812 angst results in Ottawa pick as Canada's capital

Who Knew?  On this day December 31 in 1857 Queen Victoria picked Ottawa over Toronto (now the Provincial Capital), and Kingston (the former capital of Canada).

Queen Victoria
American Invasion Still A Worry
War of 1812 angst still existed. Bytown (now Ottawa) was far enough away from the border to make it suitable against potential American expansionism.

The Railway Factor
The railway had arrived providing adequate transportation between Toronto and Montreal.

The Political Factor
Competing for the rights to the new capital were Quebec City, Toronto, Montreal and Kingston.

The reason for the new Ottawa, according to the Globe and Mail's Joe Friesen in a" Moment in Time" quotes Queen Victoria.  Ottawa "combines more advantages than any other place in Canada."  Friessen ads, " a typically Canadian compromise."

Suggested Three Capital Road Trip

Canadian history buffs might consider the 3 capital tour on a circuitous route from Toronto to Kingston to Ottawa back to Toronto through the Algonquin Park area via Highway 60 & Highway 11.

Stay in Kingston Ontario Hotels or my preference, the 1850’s Tuscany villa,  Rosemount Bed & Breakfast Inn.

Pick your Ottawa Hotels  and on the way back check the interesting towns, villages and spots in the Algonquin Area

Have you seen Canada’s most elusive creature? - The Globe and Mail

Have you seen Canada’s most elusive creature? - The Globe and Mail:

Wildlife viewing can be full of surprises and is always exciting when the smallest of creatures suddenly appear unexpectedly. For all Canadian wildlife lovers I recommend this article by Bruce Kirby. The Wolverine according to Kirby is fearless, intelligent and more astonishing than any comic character..ie. Hugh Jackman. Many Canadian destinations offer up continuous opportunities for wildlife viewing. The story highlights Banff and Banff National Park access corridors built to accommodate migrating and wandering wildlife. See video story or just head to Banff to possibly see a wolverine for yourself. Banff, Alberta: Get best Banff hotel deals on-line.
